Venice weather at a glance

  • Venice sits on a lagoon, so humidity and wind shape comfort. The same temperature can feel much colder with wind, or heavy and clammy when it’s still and damp.
  • A common feel is: hot and humid peak summer (Jul–Aug), cool and sometimes foggy/rainy winter (Nov–Feb), and walkable but variable shoulder seasons (Mar–May, Sep–Oct).
  • It’s a walking city with many bridges and steps plus vaporetto rides. On wet days, stone steps can be slick—traction matters.
  • From autumn into early winter (often around Oct–Dec), “acqua alta” (high-water flooding) can be a variable. On those days, routing and wet feet can matter more than the temperature number.
  • In summer, shade is limited in some stretches; using indoor anchors (churches/museums) at midday helps.

Winter (cool + damp/fog): wind and wetness amplify the chill

Avg low 1–4°C / high 7–10°C · Rainy days: 7–12 / 40–80 mm

  • Fog and rain can create a clammy cool feel.
  • Wind can drop perceived temperature quickly.
  • Wet stone steps can be slippery.

Suggested outfits

  • · Windproof coat/layers
  • · Grippy shoes
  • · Compact umbrella/water-safe pouch

A note for travelers

Venice winter is often about dampness and wind—keeping feet dry can change comfort a lot.

Shoulder seasons (variable): warm days, cooler nights, with rain/wind swings

Avg low 6–15°C / high 14–24°C · Rainy days: 6–10 / 40–90 mm

  • Great for walking in many weeks, but evenings cool down.
  • Autumn can bring windier and wetter spells.
  • Around Oct–Nov, high-water events can be a variable.

Suggested outfits

  • · T-shirt + light outer layer
  • · Umbrella/waterproof readiness
  • · Comfortable shoes

A note for travelers

A light layer is your best insurance—especially with vaporetto wind.

Summer (hot + humid): timing, shade, and hydration change the day

Avg low 18–22°C / high 27–31°C (can feel heavier with humidity) · Rainy days: 4–8 / 40–80 mm

  • Humidity can make heat feel heavy.
  • Midday walking and queues can drain energy quickly.
  • Morning and late afternoon often feel dramatically easier.

Suggested outfits

  • · Breathable/quick-dry clothing
  • · Hat/sunscreen/water
  • · Thin layer for cool interiors

A note for travelers

In summer, treat Venice as a morning/evening city and use indoor anchors at midday.
